What is Selank?

A Russian-developed anxiolytic heptapeptide derived from the immune peptide tuftsin.

How it works

Modulates GABAergic transmission and enkephalin metabolism, producing anxiolytic effects without sedation or dependence in Russian clinical studies.

What it has been studied for

  • Anxiety reduction without sedation
  • Improved working memory
  • Mood stabilization
  • Immune modulation
  • Enhanced focus under stress

These are effects reported or investigated in research, much of it preclinical. They are not proven outcomes or health claims.

Published research

  • Registered in Russia for generalized anxiety; small trials show anxiolytic effect comparable to low-dose benzodiazepines

Half-life

Short — minutes (intranasal; synthetic peptide)

Cautions

Not approved outside a few countries; evidence base is largely from one research tradition.

Side effects & fixes

Common side effects

  • —Nasal irritation or a runny nose with nasal sprays
  • —Headache
  • —Overstimulation, irritability or trouble sleeping (Semax)
  • —Mild drowsiness (Selank)

Histamine reactions

Rare. Nasal itching or sneezing can occur with sprays.

Common fixes

  • Use a saline rinse before the spray and alternate nostrils.
  • Lower the dose and take it in the morning to protect sleep.
  • Stay well hydrated if headaches appear.

Stop and get help

  • Severe or worsening headache, or mood changes that concern you.
  • Stop and get emergency help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, widespread hives, chest pain or fainting.

Basis: Clinical use in Russia and community reports. Educational only, not medical advice.

Medication concerns

Theoretical: no human interaction studies
  • Sedatives, anti-anxiety and sleep medicines (benzodiazepines, zolpidem)

Calming peptides such as Selank may add to their effects.

  • Stimulants (amphetamine, methylphenidate, high-dose caffeine)

Activating compounds such as Semax may add to stimulation, sleep loss or jitteriness.

  • Antidepressants, antipsychotics and seizure medicines

Not studied together. Talk to the prescriber, especially with psychiatric or seizure conditions.

  • Everything else you take, including supplements

Bring a full list of medicines and supplements to your pharmacist or clinician before starting.

Basis: No Western human interaction studies; concerns follow from reported calming or stimulating effects. Educational only, not medical advice. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine without your prescriber.
